2016 Make-Up and Skin Care Inventory Update

At the start of the year I posted my make-up and skin care inventories. Since then I've been trying to use things up and have been doing well in some areas and badly in other areas.

I've managed to reduce my skin and hair care stash down from three tubs to one, so I'm pretty happy with that. I've been regularly culling my make-up but I haven't done as well at reducing my make-up as I have with my skin and hair care. To keep me honest and so that I know where I'm at, it's time for an updated inventory.

I didn't do too bad with my make-up, it was a lot better than I thought it'd be. My foundation, lip balm, lip gloss, lip liner and primer counts all went up.

Foundations went up because I'm on the hunt for my holy grail foundation. Added to that, my local chemist is selling all Youngblood products for $19.95 so I purchased three foundations.
I'm going through my foundations and getting rid of the ones that I don't love, so hopefully by the end of the year that number will have reduced significantly.

Lip Balms are all Emma's fault. She sent me a box full of lip balms, so the blame rests with her.

I have no idea how my primer and lip liner counts went up, I don't recall buying any new ones, so maybe I didn't count properly last time, or maybe I double counted this time, I have no idea.

Lip Gloss, what can I say? I'm not sure how that one happened either. I did buy a few new glosses, but I didn't think I'd bought fourteen. Must have. Oh well. I clearly need to work on that.
I'm very happy with the progress I made with my skin and hair care. Nothing has gone up, I've had reductions in all but one area.
Overall I'm happy with my progress. I still have a long way to go and I clearly need to do more work on not purchasing cosmetics that I don't need. My plan to only buy two new products each month went out the window, I need a new strategy. Any ideas?

The Winter Skincare Edit

Now that winter is here it's time to switch up my skin care routine. I've swapped out my light, matte products and changed to rich, hydrating products for my face, got out the rich hand creams, swapped my shower gel for something with more oomph and put away the thick body lotions in favour of something lighter. Yes, you read that right. I know it sounds strange but in winter I use lighter body lotions so that I can get dressed as soon as I've applied my body lotion.

Instead of just using one serum I layer a hydrating serum over the top of my regular serum. I also apply moisturiser and tinted moisturiser under my foundation. It sounds like a lot of steps but it doesn't take long. I usually apply  all of my skin care products, give them a few minutes to soak in then apply my base products, let them absorb for a few minutes then do my make-up. Easy.

Do you change your skin care with the seasons?

The World According to my Toddler

If you hear good music, stop what you are doing and start dancing.

Jay Jays play great music.

Whenever you see a Jay Jays store run in there and have a dance.

If Mum wont let you go inside lay on the floor out the front for about a minute then commando crawl you way in to the shop.

If that doesn't work, as a last resort have a dance out the front of the store.

The washing machine spin cycle is great to dance to also.

My Favourite Multi Purpose Balms and Lotions

I love me a good multi purpose balm, I collect them. My house abounds with multi purpose balms, from paw paw to lanolin and everything in between. Today I thought I'd share a few of my favourites with you.

The reason I love multi-purpose balms so much is because of their many uses. I use them as nappy rash treatments, wound healers, hair treatment, hair smoother, lip balm, make-up remover, hydrating face mask, face and body moisturiser, hand cream, foot cream, cuticle cream, brow tamer. On the odd occasion that I travel I'll take a multi-purpose balm with me in place of cleanser, moisturiser, hair treatment, hand cream, lip balm and nappy rash cream. Packing one product is a lot easier than packing six products.

These are the ones I can't live without.

Kosmea Skin Clinic Rescue Balm - This is my first aid cream. I use it on rashes, sores, irritated skin, hayfever eyes, anywhere that needs soothing or healing.

Egyptian Magic -I mainly use this as a night cream, it's a lovely, rich treatment for parched skin. Used sparingly it makes a good day cream, but I much prefer to lather it on at night and let it do it's magic whilst I sleep.

Sugar Baby Vita+Skin Wonder Balm - I couldn't resist the pretty pink tin of Wonder Balm, it looks so cute. I keep mine on my bedside table and use it on my lips and cuticles.

Trilogy Everything Balm - I've talked about Everything Balm before. It really is a multi-purpose balm. I use it as a cleanser, moisturiser, lip balm, hydrating face mask and nappy rash balm.

Lush Ultrabalm - Scent free and non irritating, I use this on angry skin and nappy rash. It also works well as a lip balm.

Boho Balm - This is the most recent addition to my collection. Initially I loved it because of the beautiful scent, after using it for a while I love it because it covers all bases. If you are after a natural, Australian product, this one is for you.

Handmade and Marina Nourishing Rose Balm - The sole reason I bought this is because it smells like roses. My favourite uses for my Nourishing Rose balm are as a perfume and as a night cream because I get to enjoy the beautiful smell of roses.

MooGoo Shea Sorbet - Shea Sorbet is the most unique of all my multi purpose balms, the texture is just like a thick sorbet. The lime scent is beautiful, very refreshing. I can see myself using this one a lot in summer.

Lanolips Lano Allover - Lanolips recently repackaged and I'm loving the new packing, it's so retro cool. They also released the new Lano Allover. It's a rich cream that, as the name suggests, can be used all over. My favourite use is as a rich, overnight face mask.

Weleda Skin Food - Skin food is the one that I take when I'm travelling because I can use it as a face moisturiser, nappy rash treatment and hand cream. It does work as a lip balm but it's quite creamy so not ideal for use on the lips. It makes a great face cream as it's quite light.

Dr Lewinns Multi-Moisture Balm - Tiger has a tube of this in his work bag. It has a strange texture, kind of like a gloss, it's a bit sticky and can be tacky if I use too much. Use the right amount and it's a super moisturiser. Tiger uses it on his dry patches, sore lips, sunburn and irritated skin. The tube packaging makes it ideal for carrying around in a handbag (or manbag).

Natralus Paw Paw Ointment - Prior to Natralus releasing their lip butters, this was my go to lip balm. I still use it as my night time lip treatment, it's rich, hydrating and tastes great. I also use this on the boy's lips, on cuts and as a nappy rash treatment.

What's your favourite multi-purpose balm?

*Note - Boho Balm was provided for review. All other products I purchased myself.

Thoughts of the week

1. Dad gave me the My Head Is An Animal CD by Of Monsters and Men for my birthday. I've been listening to it non stop, it's awesome.

2. Thanks to the Veggie Mama I discovered Briami. I could happily live on it. I pretty much have been.

3. There's a possibility that Tiger could have work locally. It's freaking me out a little bit. He's been working away for three years now and as much as I hate it when he's away, when he's home I have him every day for two whole weeks. It means that we get to do so much together. If he works locally I'll get him one day a week. Not sure how that will go. I suppose we'll find out sooner or later.

4. There are two type of people in this world, those who iron their clothes and those who don't. I'm the latter.

5. I am in declutter mode. I've decluttered my make-up and skin care (still have a long way to go though) and I've now started attacking the junk room. I have no idea how and why we have so much crap!

FFS Friday - Bogan

Hello Friday! Fridays are the best aren't they? Or not. I used to love Friday when I worked. Not so much now. I do like having Chai home though. Poor little man hasn't been well lately, he was off four days last week and two days this week. I much prefer having him home.

Anyhow, it's FFS Friday and I've got nurt. That's right, I have nothing to complain about. How is that possible? Surely there must have been something whine worthy that happened this week.

Oh that's it.

The day has finally come.

I've turned into a country bogan.

I really have.

I cemented it this week when I purchased a flano shirt.

I'm planning to wear it with my black jeans and ugg boots.

Bogan city, I have arrived.

In my defence, it's been really, really cold down here lately. So cold that I can't feel my feet most of the time.

Whilst I absolutely love winter, I'd like to be able to feel my feet occasionally.

Thankfully I'm in good bogan company. Most of the other mothers at school are bogans in disguise too. Last week a few of us were having a discussion and one of them told us she has dress trackies. I need to get onto that.

I'm not sure why bogans get such a bad rap, I think we're pretty cool.

Lipstick and Lip Gloss Challenge

Now that my Lip Balm Challenge is over I'm starting on a Lipstick and Lip Gloss challenge. My aim is to finish two lipsticks and two lip glosses in twelve months. Considering I mainly use lip balm, it's going to be interesting.

I've selected the products that I want to finish, they are:

Chanel Boy Rouge Coco Shine
Clinique Play-Full Plump Full Potential Lips
Australis Rumba Colour Inject Mineral Lip Gloss
Revlon Peony Ultra HD Lipstick

They're all easy to wear, mlbb shades that I can wear every day which I'm hoping will make me more likely to reach for them. Both the lipsticks feel very balm like, so I intend to use them in place of lip balm, hopefully they'll be hydrating enough.

Wish me luck!

Final Lip Balm Challenge Update

Today marks the end of my Lip Balm Challenge. I wanted to finish ten lip balms in twelve months, I managed to do it in nine months. September the tenth was the end date of my challenge but I finished my tenth balm on Saturday. I considered keeping on until September to see how many more balms I could finish but decided not to as I want to start another challenge.

You can read my first post here, first update here and second update here

Initially I was planning to finish ten lip balms that I'd chosen. That quickly went out the window and I decided to finish any ten lip balms. At the half way mark I'd finished four balms and things weren't looking too hopeful. Luckily, just after I wrote my half way mark post I finished three lip balms in a row and things started looking up.

I'm so pleased with myself. It must be said that I use lip balm almost exclusively now. I put on lipstick in the morning, reapply it before school pick-up and the rest of the day I use lip balm.

Now that I've completed this challenge I'm going to set myself another one. Come back Wednesday to find out what it is.

Thoughts of the week

1. I love winter.

2. Have you seen Gla-Ma? I love her.

3. This week we found out that one of Tigers family members has terminal cancer. Please, everyone go and get your skin checked. We've booked in for our skin check. It's something that really needs to be done every year or two.

4. We've signed up to the NBN with Telstra and it's absolute crap. There are constant outages and it's so, so slow. Our ADSL2 was faster than the NBN is.

5. What's your favourite foundation? I'm on the hunt for my holy grail foundation.

FFS Friday - FML

Back in January the BIL contacted us and asked us if we could go over to visit him and SIL in July. He'd arranged for his parents to go over and thought it'd be nice if we were all there together. We agreed on the dates and booked our tickets in early February.

We arranged a unit next door to where BIL and SIL live and were looking forward to seeing them both. I was particularly looking forward to spending time with SIL as I haven't seen her for a few years.

Three weeks ago we were talking to them on Skype and when Tiger said "See you in July" he heard SIL say that she wouldn't be there. WTF? That was the first we'd heard of it, every other time she'd said she was looking forward to seeing us. FFS.

Tiger messaged BIL to find out what was going on. Turns out the whole time that we'll be over there SIL will be in KL with her parents. FFS.

She gets back the day before we leave, so we'll see her for a few hours. FFS.

If we'd known that she wasn't going to be there Tiger would have gone over on his own and it would have saved us a heap of money! FFS.

She obviously booked her tickets after we'd planned our trip, knowing that it meant she wouldn't see us. FFS.

I understand she wants to see her parents, but surely the trip could have been arranged for a week when we weren't over there? FFS.

I'm so disappointed. Now it's just me, MIL and a whole pile of males. FFS.

I don't want to go, being stuck with MIL and all the men will not be fun. FFS.

They didn't bother to tell the PILs either and when we told them MIL announced "Well I don't mind and if I don't mind no-one else should" cause she's the centre of the universe. FFS.

 FML. FFS.

May Outgoing and Incoming

It's empties time again! May was a slow month, I didn't finish much. I've hit a bit of a flat spot because I switched up my skincare for winter so everything is new.

Weleda Wild Rose Smoothing Facial Oil Capsules - These are beautiful, I'll definitely buy them again.

Sukin Energising Body Scrub - I'm on the fence about this. It was okay but not amazing. I'm not sure if I'll buy it again. I really should just stick to my favourite scrubs and stop trying new ones that I never seem to love.

Avon On Duty Sport deodorant - Avon is a swear word to me now (long story). I wasn't happy with this deodorant, it didn't work at all and that's saying something considering I used it in winter when I barely sweat.

Olay Complete Defense moisturiser - If you're after a light, non greasy sunscreen give this a go, it's brilliant.

Rimmel Brow This Way.
L'oreal Lash Architect.

The Body Shop Camomile Sumptuous Cleansing Butter - Oh how I miss my cleansing butter. It's a beautiful cleanser, I loved it. Once I've finished a few other cleansers I'll buy this again. I'd happy use this and my MooGoo Oil cleanser exclusively.

Essenzza Natural Facial Cleansing Wipes.

Sanctuary Spa Hot Sugar Scrub.

Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Daily Cleansing Pads - These are okay but I prefer the First Aid Beauty ones.

Lancome DreamTone - I wasn't impressed with this, it did nothing at all.

Alpha-H Age Delay Eye and Lip Treatment Cream - Love, love, love. This is a definite repurchase.

These are all tosses. Some of them are really old, the Revlon gloss and Rimmel blush I just didn't like.

Now for this months incoming.

Oh yes I did. How could I not, haha.

The Ariel balms are beautiful, they're a holy grail already.

I placed my first BH Cosmetics order. It won't be my last. The products are super cheap, shipping was fast and everything is gorgeous.

Lano Allover is going to be one of my winter skin staples. I've been using it as a hand treatment and night cream, it's wonderfully rich and hydrating.

May was a lucky month for me, I won two prizes on Instagram. The LA Girls Matte Pigment Gloss was one of them.

Ah Boho Balm, where have you been all my life? You all need this gorgeous multi-purpose balm.

This is the other prize I won, from the Facial Co.

Current blush rotation

Blush isn't a topic that I talk about often because I'm not a blush fiend. I'm a one or two blush girl, I'll use the same few until I get sick of them and then change to something else. Since I finished my beloved Hourglass Ambient Lighting blush I've been at a loss. I'd happily only use the Hourglass blush for the rest of my days, however I have a whole pile of other blushes going to waste. I'm tempted to toss them all and get another Hourglass blush, but until I give in to that temptation I've been forcing myself to use a few of the blushes in my collection. These are the ones I currently have on rotation.

Givenchy Magic Cheek and Lip Balm, MAC Have a Lovely Day Casual Colour, Rimmel Pop of Pink Stay Blushed, Becca Watermelon Beach Tint, Arbonne Ballet and Taffeta.

I tend to use cream cheek products more often, mainly because I can smoosh them on with my fingers for a nice sheer wash of colour. If I get it in the wrong spot (always!) it's easy to rub in or put a bit of powder over the top and the problem is gone. Simple.

Givenchy Magic Cheek and Lip Balm is love, it's sheer, glossy and makes me look like I have a natural glow. You can read my full review here

Rimmel Stay Blushed is an interesting product, it has really intense pigment and a mousse like texture. I have to be really careful with this and only apply a small amount or I look like a clown.

I've always had a love/hate relationship with Becca Beach Tints. They're gorgeous products but they just aren't reliable. No matter how much I shake or squeeze the tube, sometimes the product comes out watery and other times it's creamy and gorgeous. It's been the same with every Beach Tint I've owned. Watermelon is the best so far, most of the time it's gorgeous, but it still has it's watery days.

Both of the Arbonne blushes are gorgeous. I particularly like Ballet because it's pale enough that it isn't obvious if I apply too much.

MAC Have a Lovely Day Casual Colour is another lip and cheek product, great for carrying around in my handbag. The colour is very similar to the Becca Beach Tint, just more opaque.

Thoughts of the week

1. Sometimes people really disappoint me.

2. I had my first turmeric latte a few weeks ago, it was amazing. I used this recipe from Goop.

3. As of the middle of next year cosmetics tested on animals will be banned in Australia. It's going to be very, very interesting. It'll either get really messy, the brands will find a way around it or they'll pull out of the Australian market.

4. Lately I've been finding that I'm rather judgemental. It's not a good thing so I'm making a concerted effort not to be.

5. Chewbacca Mum is all over the internet at the moment. I love her, she has so much joy inside her. I've been watching her whenever I need to cheer up.

FFS Friday - Bee

My MIL is FFS Friday gold. She really is.

Last time she was down, as usual she was in fine form.

She always refers to herself in the third person. FFS.

After 10 years you'd think I'd be used to it but I'm not.

It's so confusing.

Last visit I couldn't resist and asked her why she talks about herself in the third person. Here's how it went down:

Me: Why do you always refer to yourself as Mum?
MIL: Because FIL always calls me Mum.
Me: But that's because he's talking about you, why do you do it?
MIL: Well I'm not going to call myself Lyall am I?
Me: No, you'd just say I instead of your name.
MIL: Well that's just what I've always done and that's what I'll continue to do.

That reason always gets me. Just because it's always been that way doesn't mean it's a good way to continue.

A little while after that conversation Eljay got stung on the neck by a bee. MIL went into major panic mode. FFS.

She was flapping around telling us that we needed to take him straight to hospital. FFS.

He's been stung before and isn't allergic to bees.

She nagged on at Tiger until he told her to shut up so then she started on at me. FFS.

I was trying to look after Eljay and she's standing in front of me ranting.

MIL: You need to listen to me.
Me: I'm listening.
MIL: No, GQ you need to listen to me.
Me: I'm listening.
MIL: Can you please listen to me.
Me: I'm listening.
MIL: You really need to listen to me.
Me: I am listening, what do you want to tell me?

She wanted us to call 000 or take Eljay straight to hospital because the sting was on his neck. He wasn't showing any signs of distress. There was no swelling other than localised swelling around the sting, he was swallowing and feeding okay.

Just to appease her we called Health Direct who told us to give him an antihistamine and panadol. They also told us what signs to look for.

MIL wasn't happy with that and said we should have told them he was stung on the throat not the neck. We didn't tell them that because he wasn't stung on the throat, he was stung on the neck. FFS.

I can only imagine what it must be like to be her, she panics about everything, it must be so stressful.

The hairdryer for people who don't use hairdryers

I have a confession to make. I'm really lazy when it comes to my hair. I never style it and before getting my Vidal Sassoon Pro Styling 1000 hairdryer I rarely blow dried it.  Now I blow dry my hair every time I wash it!

My regular hairdryer is great quality, but blow drying and styling my hair takes so long that I just can't be bothered. I picked up my Vidal Sassoon Pro Styling hairdryer on a whim. It was on sale at Priceline so I grabbed it and haven't looked back. Whilst it's not the most powerful hairdryer it does the job and makes drying and styling my hair very easy.

It comes with three brush attachments, the round one for curling, the comb one to volumise and the brush one to smooth. Even though my hair needs volume, I usually use the brush head because I can still give my hair volume with it and I find it easier to use than the comb head.

The great thing about this hairdryer is that I can use it with one hand, so if my arm gets sore I just swap over, easy. Plus it's super fast, I can get my hair totally dried within ten minutes, where as a regular hairdryer takes me about fifteen minutes.

If you're a lazy hair styler like I am, you need one of these hairdryers!
They're a bargain at $59.95 and even more of a bargain when they go on sale, I got mine for $40.
Now that I know how great this dryer is I'll pick up a more powerful model once mine dies.

May Favourites

How is May over already? We're nearly half way through the year!

Pout Perfect - As a long time follower of Beauty Swatch I was very excited when I won a copy of Yishan's Pout Perfect book. It's full of beautiful photos and is a lip product addicts dream.

Boho Balm - This one ticks all the boxes, it's an all natural, Australian multi purpose balm. I've been using it on my hayfever irritated eyes, dry skin as as a lip balm. It's quickly becoming a holy grail product.

It's Skin Macaron Lip Balm - The only reason I bought this is because I wanted a lip balm in a macaron tub. I figured if the balm was crap I'd just toss it out and put Carmex in the cute little pot. Lucky for me the balm is gorgeous, it smells and tastes like chocolate and is super hydrating. I got mine from Ebay.

Arbonne Ballet Blush  - My hunt for the perfect blush continues. Ballet is coming pretty close, it gives a beautiful sheer flush of colour and looks very natural.

Lanolips Lano Allover Balm - My love for Lanolips is well documented. With their packaging overhaul came a new product, an Allover Balm. Naturally I had to get it. I've been using it as a night treatment for my dried out winter ravaged skin and it's working a treat.

Natralus Paw Paw Moisturiser - I know, I'm featuring three all over balms in this post, I'm obsessed. The latest release from Natralus is their Paw Paw moisturiser. It's a light lotion that can be used all over the face and body. I've been loving it as a body lotion and hand cream. It'll make a great face moisturiser in summer when my skin isn't so dry.

Iluka Luxe Lip Treatment - I've had the Luxe Lip Treatment sitting in my stash for months now. When I first bought it I used it a few times, used it as a lip balm and didn't like it. A few months ago I dug it out again and realised that it works really well as a pre lipstick treatment/primer. It absorbs quickly and makes my lips feel quite matte, so the lipstick sticks better and lasts longer.

Barry M Lip Oil - I can't make an ASOS order without ordering a lip product, especially if it's a lip oil. Barry M has two lip oils, Berry and Coconut. They didn't have the coconut available so I purchased Berry and it's love. I find this to be very similar to the Clarins lip oil. Hopefully we'll get both of the flavours in Australia soon.

Dr Pickles Paw Paw Balm -Another day another paw paw balm. I spied this at the supermarket so added it to my cart, cause products you get at the supermarket don't count, they're groceries. This is a lovely scented, thick ointment that makes a great overnight lip treatment.

Thoughts of the week

1. Did you know that through your local library you can get free books and magazines on your phone or tablet? How amazing is that? You just sign up with your library card info and there's a whole pile of free books and magazines. I've been loving being able to read all the latest magazines.

2. Speaking of magazines, I've been reading the Best of Beauty lists that they put out regularly. What's with the ridiculously priced products? Do they really think that the average person can afford a day cream that costs $500 or more? Or even $200? I don't know why they include super expensive products, actually I do, it's because the company advertises with them and they have to.

3. Which leads me to my next point. I trust bloggers and online reviews a whole lot more than I trust magazines. I'd bet a lot of the time they haven't even tried the product they're writing about.

4. It's been really cold here lately, I love it. As I type this I can't feel my feet, I need warmer shoes.

5. Thanks to gastro I am now at my pre baby weight. Knew getting sick had to have some advantages.

FFS Friday - Wee wee wee

One of the many things they don't tell you about being a parent is how often you'll have to deal with wee and poo.

Let's face it, most of the things about parenthood they don't tell you.

Even when the kids are toilet trained there's still random attacks of bodily fluid waiting for you when you least expect it. Like last week.

There I was innocently playing Ninja Turtles with the boys. We were hunting the foot clan. As I was walking past the toilet I gleefully noticed two empty toilet rolls. I'd been wanting to start saving them up to create a play area under the table, so thought I'd hit the jackpot when I found two.

I raced into the toilet and pounced on the first toilet roll. When I picked it up I got covered in wee. FFS.

I picked up the next one and that was also covered in wee. FFS.

Then I noticed that the back of the toilet was covered in wee. It was all over the back of the seat and dripping down both sides of the toilet. FFS.

The toilet tissue basket was also covered in wee. FFS.

So was the entire toilet seat. FFS.

Turns out Chai had 'forgotten' to lift the toilet seat when he went to the toilet. FFS.

Fun times.

After last weeks rant about the teachers not sending Chai home when he was sick, the special needs child is now off sick and his Mum is complaining about kids being sent to school when they're sick. As she should. I'm really hoping she'll say something to the teachers and they'll be more vigilant about sending kids home when they're sick.

How to create a lip product wardrobe

Recently when I was playing around in my lipstick stash I got thinking about what would be my ideal lip product collection size. Clearly it'd be way, way less than I have now! Years ago I had two glosses and one lipstick. All of them I wore until they were empty and then replaced them. Those were the days. Whilst I don't want to go back to those days, I do want to significantly reduce the size of my collection. Here's what I think it'd look like:

Bold red - I'd have this in a matte, crayon and sheer formula. I wouldn't bother with cream, I like my red to be either sheer or bullet proof.

Bright statement lip - for me that's pink, for others it might be coral or orange. As with the red, I'd have this in a matte finish and a crayon because they're easy to carry around.

Winter shade - Burgundy, maroon, plum etc. In a matte, crayon and sheer formula.

Something different such as purple, blue, green or whatever takes your fancy. - Whilst I love the look of blue/green/grey lips, it's not something I'd choose so I'd go for a matte purple.

Nude - The right nude is hard to find. When you do find it, buy two. If you can find it in different formulas, buy two of them also.

Everyday colour which for me a mlbb pinky mauve. I'd probably have two or three of these because it's what I reach for most often. I'd choose pinks, mauves and lavenders.

I'd have a gloss in each of the shades listed above other than bright and a clear gloss.

For lip balms I think 10 regular ones and five tinted balms.

All up that comes to around twenty lipsticks, six glosses and fifteen lip balms.

What do you think? Have you created a lip product wardrobe? What's your ideal lip collection size?
