Help! Baby product recommendations needed

Mr GQ and I are due to have our first baby any day now. As a result of this, in the last few months I've found myself in unfamiliar territory. First it was pregnancy skin care and now it's baby skin care. Whilst I use all sorts of chemicals on my skin, I'm not willing to use harsh products on my bub. So I need help. What should I use? And what shouldn't I use? What worked for you and what didn't?

I've made a soothing room spray to use in bub's room, I scented it with lavender and vanilla so hopefully that will help to calm bub and help it to sleep. Are there any other room sprays that you'd recommend?

Also, any other baby tips would be gratefully accepted.

This is me at 37 weeks and 3 days pregnant:

  1. wow, that is some baby bump you've got there! How exciting that it's almost time :)

I don't know much about babies or baby products, but probably avoid J&J baby oil which is 100% mineral oil

  2. Oooh anytime now. How exciting! I don't have any kids yet so I'm on even more unfamiliar ground :P

Perhaps you could check with Jacie (You've Got Nail)?

  3. I used to use Dermaveen soap free wash a lot (I only stopped because I wanted to try something new) and my friends with babies use it in their bath. It's got a neutral pH level which is good, and it's a really high quality, low-irritation wash.

For ULTRA sensitive baby skin Cetaphil is decent, but it's so mild I wonder if it's really cleaning sometimes...

  4. congrats!
having a new bub is such a happy time for you and everyone involved. i've never seen anything bring joy to everyone's life like a new baby does!

i found that quite a few friends gave me great botty butters/nappy rash creams, organic ones that dont have any harmless stuff in the them. perfect potion, gaia, aromababy.
we sell third stone baby products in the store, their baby wash is very good. and bee beauty botty butter which is handmade with organic products in Tassie.

i'd definitely steer clear of any johnsons products (but you would know that i'm sure).

my little boy is 2.5years old now and we use just water and QV bath oil now.

i really dont think you need to buy and use a real lot when it comes to new bubs, they are so beautiful and smell so lovely on their own that masking their baby smell with other products is a waste in my opinion.

the best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy. i'm a few weeks behind you - i'm at 30 weeks now!

  5. What a beautiful baby bump you have mama!

Well the best thing for the baby at first is just warm water. He doesn't really need any soap the first month or so of life. Their precious skin is so sensitive. I didn't even use a wash cloth on my babies until they were over a month. I just rubbed their bodies down with my hands and warm water.

My doctor told me to use dove soap but I found some stuff at babies r Us that I liked. It is called Otopia. I don't think you can get it in stores (we ordered it) but if you want something from the store California Baby is pretty good. We got that when we couldn't order the other stuff. Babies r us has a pretty big selection of organic and natural products for baby.
    Good luck mama!

  6. You look wonderful :D

As for baby stuff I just massaged the kids with olive oil or grapeseed oil, soap - goats milk type ones are good and gentle.

Other baby tips - well for me cosleeping (aka bedsharing) was the best - no getting up for feeds, you can lay down and feed/go back to sleep and bubba sleeps better being close to mama :)

  9. How exciting! Good luck with everything.

I love using Gaia & Aveeno products on my kids, my youngest is 18mths.

But for hair I use the Johnsons shampoo I find it cleans the hair the best.

  10. Hi GQ, you've got a big baby bump! I read in a baby book that you shouldn't put any products on baby's skin for the first month. Just wash the baby with warm water.

I'm still not sure whether I'd do that with mine, so perhaps I'd be asking you for tips next time!!! :)
