Foundation experimentation

After reading on a few beauty websites about mixing foundation with tinted moisturiser I thought I'd give it a try. I've never mixed my foundation before, I've always just applied it straight from the bottle or tube. I'm usually in a hurry in the mornings do can't be bothered with things that take up extra time, but I've found that mixing foundation and tinted moisturiser isn't too time consuming so it is something that I'd actually do.

The first products that I tried mixing were my Stila Illuminating foundation and Stila Illuminating tinted moisturiser. I used these alone without any moisturiser underneath.
The finish looked quite nice but by halfway through the day my face felt very tight and dry. I constantly sprayed on rose water for the rest of the day but my face still felt dry. So that one was a fail.

The second experiment was Stila Illuminating tinted moisturiser mixed with Laura Mercier Silk Creme foundation. I used moisturiser underneath this time. This was a really good mix. I sometimes find the Silk Creme foundation to be a bit too heavy but mixing it with the Stila tinted moisturiser gave me glowy coverage that looked light but still gave great coverage. I'll definitely use this mix again.

Next I tried mixing my Laura Mercier Silk Creme foundation with my Red Earth Illuminator. This didn't work at all well. I used a moisturiser underneath but by lunchtime my face felt dry and the foundation looked horrible, it sunk into all my fine lines and made me look ten years older. This one was a huge fail.

I'm going to continue experimenting with mixing my foundations and will report back with any good combinations that I find.

  1. I've often wondered about doing this, but have never tried it, like you feel it is an extra step in an already rushed morning. Not good that certain combos made your face feel tight, nothing worse I think. Thanks for this. Jan x

  2. I like mixing a very "cakey" full coverage foundation (like Estee Lauder Double Wear) with a very light and glowy foundation (like NARS Sheer glow).

  3. What a great idea! I'm going to have to try and do this now too, I have some foundations that are too light for me,so if I mix them with a tinted moisturiser they might just be right! I'll give it a try! Thanks for posting this!

  4. I'm glad your second attempt was more successful, I personally love mixing TM with mineral foundation :)

  5. I've tried mixing the two a couple of times with little success. It just goes weirdly streaky on me.

  6. I do this with foundations that do not work for me for whatever reason (to light, to drying, to moisturizing) and it makes it so i can use up stuff since i did pay for it
